Oh Floor where art thou....?

For anyone who does not know yet I took on a project this past weekend. I had this great idea to redo the kitchen floor in an effort to update our kitchen a little bit. We talked about tile, then laminate tile and then I said "lets put everything up and refinish the wood floors." Little did I know what I was getting myself in to. Well to begin with there was two....thats two layers of sub-flooring and laminate flooring. So it took me 3 or 4 hours just to get all that up because there were enough nails and staples to hold the floor to the ceiling. Then we were left with this black, tar paper mess that was put under the flooring when the house was built.

This was stuck to the wood flooring and there was dried, hard adhesive all around it. Just looking you would say there wasn't any wood flooring under there. I tried to start scrapping the paper and I was not getting anywhere. I went the next morning to rent the sander. I started sanding and the tar paper was just gunking up the sandpaper. I was going to go broke buying sandpaper. So I reevaluated how to get the paper up. It was on my hands and knees scraping with all I had. Just an hour and half later it was all up. Then it was off to sanding again, and sanding and sanding. I didn't finish until 8:30 that night. Once I had the floor sanded I realized it was pine and not oak, so it was lighter then we wanted the floor. So the next morning I stained the floors a medium tone with a tint of orange. Then we had to wait 8 hours for that to dry....

Then it was time for the fun stuff....polyurithane. It requires 3 coats and 3-4 hours to dry in between coats. So when Saturday was coming to an end I had the stain and two layers of poly done. Finally after church Sunday I was able to get the final coat of the poly on the floor. Now it is done, it's inner beauty has come out and come Tuesday night we can move back into the kitchen. We have transformed our dining room into a make shift kitchen for the past 4 days and April is ready for her kitchen back.

We had a nice Easter with April's dad. Her mom is in Spain visiting her brother so we missed having her here. We were supposed to be at Brian and Tammy's for Easter but Sophie came down with a fever Sunday morning so we kept her home. She is doing better now. We just had a quite day here at the house and Lin headed back to Columbus las night.
